GSO 2598:2021 Scope
A. SAFETY
1. ETHANOL IS FLAMMABLE AND MUST BE KEPT AWAY FROM OPEN FLAME AND OTHER IGNITION SOURCES.
B. SAMPLE SIZE AND APPLICABILITY
1. This is a static headspace gas chromatographic / mass spectrometric (HS-GC-MS) method for the identification and simultaneous quantitation of ethanol (CAS RN 64-17-5) at low concentrations in liquid and powder nutritional products by the use of deuterium labeled ethanol-d5 (CAS RN 1859-08-1) as the internal standard. This method will quantitate ethanol over a concentration range of 200 µg to 2500 µg ethanol/g product (0.02% to 0.25% w/w ethanol in product).
2. This method is restricted to use by or under the supervision of analysts experienced in the use of HS-GC-MS systems and skilled in the interpretation of the data. Each analyst must demonstrate the ability to generate acceptable results following the method procedure.
