GSO 2492:2015 Scope
Hot tapping is not common practice in oil processing and petrochemical facilities due to high risk involved. Hot tapping is usually performed when it is not feasible, or is impractical, to take the piping or equipment out of service or to purge or clean it by conventional methods. This standard specifies safety and technical requirements for execution of “hot tap” branch connections onto pipelines and piping system containing hydrocarbons under operating conditions. This standard mainly considers hot tapping on pipes but it is possible to perform hot taps on tank and other equipment .The subject document can be useful for welding on live lines and stoppling procedures also. Hot-taps should not be performed on pressure vessels. There are special requirements for hot tapping on flare lines and tanks. A detailed, written, job specific hot tap procedure should be available before starting each job to help ensure that appropriate measures are addressed. It is intended to cover hot tapping on carbon steels. It is assumed that the piping systems are designed and operated in accordance with ASME B 31.3 and pipeline systems are designed and operated in accordance with ASME B 31.4 or ASME B 31.8. This standard does not cover hot tapping.
