This part of IEC 60050 gives the general terminology concerning quantities and units, the terminology of SI, terms used in names and definitions of quantities, and some basic concepts in metrology. Terms and definitions appearing in the third edition of the International Vocabulary of Metrology (VIM - ISO/IEC Guide 99:2007) are reproduced with minor changes. Notes and examples are sometimes adapted to the needs of electrotechnology. Only concepts not defined in IEC 60050-300 (grouping IEV Parts 311 to 314) are taken into account. This terminology is of course consistent with the terminology developed in the other specialized parts of the IEV. This horizontal standard is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 108. One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of horizontal standards in the preparation of its publications. The contents of this horizontal standard will not apply unless specifically referred to or included in the relevant publications.
